Abstract: A robust and adaptive subspace CFAR detector is analyzed. The detector is an extension of the matched CFAR subspace detector with known noise covariance matrix, to the case of unknown noise covariance matrix. A robust method to estimate this unknown quantity, from secondary data, based on the spatial sign covariance matrix, is considered. The performance of the obtained detector, specifically, the impact on the false alarm rate, when the secondary data contain non-homogeneities, is studied by Monte Carlo Simulations. The results show that under certain conditions, the modified detector maintains the false alarm constant.
