In this tutorial, we provide a state-of-the art survey of the multi-user MIMO area. The underlying goal of the course will be to illustrate how to best exploit multiple transmitting and receiving multi-antenna devices, whose numbers increase greatly the number of degrees of freedom at the disposal of the MIMO system designer. These degrees of freedom must be exploited as cleverly as possible for the interest of the networks and/or the users. The points addressed in the tutorial include (i) a review of useful results for point-to-point (single user) MIMO; (ii) network capacity considerations for MIMO systems; (iii) channel modeling for single-user vs. multi-user MIMO systems; (iv) multi-user MIMO for single cell downlink (antenna combining algorithms and power allocation); (v) multi-user MIMO for single cell uplink; (vi) scheduling issues; (vii) aspects of multi-cell multi-user MIMO and cooperative versus non-cooperative multi-user MIMO.
