Abstract

Multimedia retrieval is growing in importance due both to the increased consumer interest in a personalized media environment and the explosive growth in the use of music players, personal video recorders, camera phones and video cameras. This half-day tutorial teaches signal-processing practitioners the tools and techniques that make multimedia retrieval possible. We want practitioners in this field to know how they can contribute solutions that will help users find their desired content. We assume a general background in signal processing and we will describe and demonstrate aspects of multimedia retrieval that are new and different for a signal processing audience. The tutorial will (i) provide an overview of the multimedia retrieval field; (ii) describe what is different about multimedia retrieval, query formulation and evaluation; (iii) talk about file formats and low-level features; and (iv) demonstrate multimedia retrieval tools. In this half-day tutorial we will provide context for all the important ideas, with as much depth as possible, and provide pointers to the literature for those who want more details. The tutorial will include many audio and video examples.
